Makeup Man (2011)

Story

The film has Jayaram as Balu, a Master in Business Administration, who is amidst losses after floating an event management company. He is in such deep debt that he has to enter his own house after dark like a thief to avoid bumping into his many creditors. It is in this dismal situation that he is forced to take care of Soorya (Sheela), who is madly in love with him and has fled from her home before her marriage to be with him. Balu’s only company in the city is a film production manager Kichu Manjaly (Suraj Venjarammoodu), who arranges their stay in the hotel room allotted for a new heroine of the movie. Confusions galore follows and Soorya is forced to act as the new face and soon she is selected as the heroine of the new film ’Cindrella’ by director Siddharth, which is under production. The director changes her name to 'Anamika' and in order to stay close with her, Balu takes the role of her personal makeup man. After that the couple manages to escape one difficult situation after other, until things take a severe spin just before the intermission. The basic storyline bears similarity to several films from the past, like Ram Gopal Varma's Rangeela, for instance. There are some nice moments in between but mostly, the story goes along on highly predictable lines and in a disturbingly slow pace.Kunchacko Boban and Prithviraj appear doing cameo roles, without making much of an impact to the story. With a rather ordinary script, the film develops in the absence of a definite direction or focus. The actors involved seem to be disinterested in the proceedings after a while. The visuals by Azhagappan are fine but the music by Vidyasagar doesn't help things a bit.The climax is where the film falters big time, and the court scene which goes on and on, isn't easy viewing material. There is an alarmingly high number of lowbrow moments here that lets the film just drift away from the viewers. The script very rarely runs deep, and the characters and the situations are jumbled up further with each passing minute.Makeup Man offers Jayaram the actor, nothing new and this is the Jayaram whom we have seen in quite a lot of films before. Sheela delivers a convincing performance and so does Siddiq. Kunchacko Boban and Prithviraj are around as well, in cameos.Anyway the movie was able to make a huge Initial collection due to th MultiStar effect.

Urumi (2011)

Plot

The film starts with a short introduction to the history of Portuguese exploration in the in the Age of Discovery to India, referring the legendary landing of explorer Vasco da Gama on 20 May 1498 in Calicut, the kingdom ruled by Zamorins of Calicut. The typical Primary School teachers narration (by Malayalam actor K. P. A. C. Lalitha) is initially accompanied with Google Image Search on "Vasco da Gama", followed by stills from his journey and moving images at the end. The meeting of Vasco da Gama (Robin Pratt) with Zamorin with traditional hospitality, and the failed interview to produce any concrete results is also depicted. Then the celebrations of the greatest discovery till in Lisbon is shown (Vasco da Gama's expedition was successful beyond all reasonable expectation, bringing in cargo that was worth sixty times the cost of the expedition). In a party, da Gama is seen talking to his young son, Estêvão, who will later turn crucial character in the film.

The scene changes to a club in present day Goa, where we see two young men, Krishna Das (Prithviraj) and his friend, dancing. These two young men are running a music troupe and are completely unaware of the history or heritage of their land. From the agents of a multinational mining cooperation, Krishna Das knows that his ancestral property in Kerala leased out to a N. G. O. by his late mother is rich in minerals and is free to be sold as the lease period has lapsed. The company offers him a large of money as advance. Krishna Das is told that there some problems exist, that he has to convince the people running the N. G. O. for this transaction. When he reaches the plot, he is kidnapped by some tribal (who will have to vacate their lands, if the mining begins) men to cave deep in the forest, and where he meets their chief Thandachan (Arya). Thandachan explains to him that he is the descendant of Chirakkal Kelu Nayanar, and Thandachan resumes the narration.

The narration continues with Portuguese activities in India, and effects of Colonization on the Malabar Coast. In 1502, Gama commanded the 4th Portuguese Armada to India, a fleet of fifteen ships and eight hundred men, with the object of enforcing Portuguese interests in the east. On reaching India in October 1502, Gama started capturing any Arab vessel he came across in Indian waters. On his way to Cannanore when he had reached the northern parts of the Indian Ocean, Gama waited for a ship to return from Mecca and seized all the merchandise on it. The Portuguese chases the pilgrim ship down, which surrenders rather quickly, probably imagining that its master and they had enough money to ransom it off. But Vasco da Gama shrugs off all the offers.

The Nair (Nairs were fierce warrior clans in Malabar) general of the king of Kolathunad, Chirakkal Kothuwal (Arya), sents a Brahmin negotiator and his own son, Kelu, to the Portuguese ship São Gabriel for negotiations on Mîrî. But, da Gama rejects all peace talks and barbarously cut off the Brahmin's ears and sews ears of his dog on the same spot. He then ordered the hundreds of passengers be locked in the hold and Mîrî, and which contained many wealthy Muslim merchants — to be set on fire. It took several days to finally go down completely, and general of the king of Kolathunad, Chirakkal Kothuwal storms to São Gabriel to rescue his son, Kelu. But, on this charismatic attempt Chirakkal Kothuwal loses his life to the Portuguese, and only Kelu escapes devastated by his fathers loss. Vavvali, a Tamil Muslim boy, takes Kelu with him to his dwelling, and treats him as his own younger brother. Kelu forms an Urumi, specially made with the left over ornaments of the dead women and children of a Mecca Ship, Miri. He takes the oath that he wants to kill da Gama.

Then it shows a foreshadowing of Kelu (Prithviraj) and Vavvali (Prabhu Deva) as adults hunting rabbits in a forest somewhere in Kolathunad. Where they are confronted by some strangers trying to abduct Bala (Nithya Menon), the princess of Kolathunad. Kelu and Vavvali save the princess, but they are subsequently captured by the soldiers of Kolathiri, accompanied by the heir apparent, Bhanu Vikraman (Ankur Khanna) of Chirakkal. They are charged with attempted kidnap of the Princess and keeping foreign weapons such as pistol. Originally the pistol belonged to the real abductors, but the king's judgement was the execution by elephant. On the way, Princess Bala comes and reveals that these men are in fact saviors, not attempted abductors. He joins hands with the king to jointly kill vasco da gama and the remaining part forms the rest of the story

Plot

In an unknown location in the Nepalese Himalayas, a young monk (played by Siddhartha) is about to be crowned the Rimpoche of the monastery, when a gang of black magicians led by an unnamed character (played by Puneet Issar) kidnap him. It is revealed that the leader of the black magicians wishes to make a human sacrifice of the Rimpoche in order to attain invincibility. The other monks in the monastery also understand that the Rimpoche's saviour will arrive from across the Himalayas to rescue him from the clutches of the black magicians. In the meantime, the young Rimpoche manages to escape from the clutches of the black magicians and runs away to Kathmandu.

At the other end of the subcontinent, in a small village in Kerala, Ashokan (Mohanlal) is an unemployed youth who, along with the other members of his club, whiles his time away competing with his cousin Appukuttan (Jagathi Sreekumar) and his club in a series of trivial competitions. Appukuttan finds himself on the losing side of every such competition, adding to his insecurity complex, which leads him to suspect Ashokan of having an affair with his, Appukuttan's, fiancee Damayanti (played by Urvashi).

When an astrologer predicts to Ashokan's mother, Sumathi (played by Sukumari), that Ashokan is likely to commit a murder if he remains in Kerala, Ashokan is bundled away to Nepal to stay with his uncle Captain (retired) Krishnankutty Menon (M. S. Thripunithura), whom he hasn't met since childhood. Unbeknownst to Ashokan, Appukuttan flies into Nepal beforehand and establishes himself in Krishanankutty Menon (Kutty Mama)'s house, masquerading as Ashokan. Ashokan is cast out onto the streets of Kathmandu, where he meets the Rimpoche and forms a friendship with the young lad.

Appukuttan attempts to connive his way into marrying Kutty Mama's daughter, Ashwati (Madhoo) - a researcher into Nepalese traditions and black magic at a university in Kathmandu. But Ashokan, with the Rimpoche's assistance, manages to cast doubt into the mind of Kutty Mama and win over Ashwati.

Ashokan and Ashwati then witness one of the black magician's minions kidnapping the Rimpoche. Upon following the kidnapper, they end up confronting the black magician himself. In the ensuing melee, the black magician grievously wounds Ashwati and blinds Ashokan, and leaves the two of them to their deaths in the forest. Both of them are rescued by the adivasi tribe tasked with protecting the Rimpoche's monastery. Ashokan is then told of how he is the Chosen One, and is trained by an adivasi teacher to overcome his blindness and become a warrior tasked with rescuing the Rimpoche.

In the meantime, the jealous and suspicious Appukuttan follows Ashwati and Ashokan into the forest and is captured by a tribe of adivasis who torture him.

Ashokan then ventures into the black magician's hideout, rescues the Rimpoche, and brings him back to the monastery. The Rimpoche then, aided by an ailing old monk, restores Ashokan's eyesight. As the solar eclipse nears, the monks begin the coronation of the Rimpoche. The black magician rushes to the monastery to kill the Rimpoche before he is crowned. But Ashokan stands in the black magician's way, and in the climactic fight, kills the latter.

Ashokan then discovers that Ashwati is not dead as he had previously feared. Appukuttan makes a final appearance, trained as a warrior by the adivasis who captured and tortured him previously. In the comical fight that ensues, Appukuttan is beaten up by Ashokan.

Daivathinte Vikruthikal (1992)

Plot

The story begins in 1954, when the French, the colonial rulers were packing off from Mahe, a coastal town in North Kerala, after 230 years, leaving behind remnants of a cultural history. Those, who considered themselves as belonging to Francophone culture, jumped on to the first available vessel to France.

Alphonso ignored the repeated pleas of his wife, Maggi to leave the land, where they no longer "belonged". The new social order became more, suffocating as Alphonso's earnings (as a "magician" of sorts) dwindled. The arrival of their son, Michael, from France revived hopses of a life without poverty, but Michael went back, leaving behind counterfeit gold and plunging the Alphonso family in deeper debts. Daughter Elsie's affair with Sasi became a local scandal.

Alphonso decided to leave, but the decision hung in the air. Alphonso looked around in the realisation that he cannot tear himself away from Mahe and the river to which he belonged. Mahe was within him even in a society, where he had no reason for the sense of belonging. In a way, the film reveals what is now described as authentic "ethnicity".

Beena, the daughter of K.P.Haridas, who died a few years back is not in good terms with her mother Ratnam, over her second marriage. Ratnam also happens to visit the house at the same time. There she meets Kuttimalu, a middle aged lady, who was once a house maid in her teenage days. Kuttimalu is welcomed by grandmother with the same warmth that she enjoyed long back, and she now informs that her daughters are now well settled and are leading a happy life. Ratnam is also affectionate towards Kuttimalu, who had once had an affair with Haridas. In th night, while arranging the old books of K.P.Haridas, Ratnam comes across the snaps of Kuttimalu, which he had taken in his college days. She hands them over to Kuttimalu, which takes her back to the old days. The story switches to late seventies, when Kuttimalu (Archana Kavi) had arrived in the house as a housemaid along with Appukuttan, her cousin and her grandmother. Kuttimalu succeeds in winning the heart of the mother of Haridas within no time. She was an innocent village girl, who always found fun in sharing secrets with Ammini (Rima Kallingal), another girl of her age. Ammini informs her about the myth of Neelathamara (blue lotus). According to believers, if they offer a one ruppee note at the temple pond and prays deeply to the god, the flower will blossom the next morning and his/her wish will turn into truth. The arrival of Haridas Kailash, a final year law student adds more colors to her life. He succeeds in alluring Kuttimalu in a short span, which she believes is real. She fails to understand that its was just fun that Haridas is looking for. Her prayer at the river pond results in blossoming of Neelathamara (blue lotus), which takes her to cloud nine. But the news of engagement of Haridas to Ratnam comes in as a shock, which breaks her down mentally. She slowly realizes that Haridas was never serious in his affair with her and tries to over come the grief by silently serving Ratnam, his new wife. Ratnam, one day comes to know about the affair between them, and when asked, Haridas replies down so casulally, which makes her go berserk. Ratnam orders Kuttimalu to leave the house, which she accepts silently. She is taken home by Appukuttan, with whom she got married. Now years have passed and Haridas is no more and both ladies have matured enough in their lives. The film ends with Kuttimalu once again with full heart preparing to take care of octogenarian mother of Haridas.
